SATRA offers a range of footwear related training courses for member companies.

Courses:

Basic Shoemaking

A two-day course reviewing the main aspects of shoemaking. Delegates meet SATRA specialists and visit a shoe factory.

Health and safety

A three-day course explaining the requirements of current European legislation. This course offers practical advice and training for supervisors to carry out risk assessment in their own factories.

Sole adhesion

A one-day course covering the main aspects of sole adhesion. Preparation, adhesive systems, through to health and safety.

Soling

A one day course for obtaining specialist knowledge of soling materials, performance, and design considerations.

Consumer complaints

A one day course dealing with all aspects of consumer returns, such as safety, quality, UK legal requirements, labelling, liability, examination, and assessment.

Introduction to shoemaking

A course which gives non-shoemaking personnel a broad appreciation of the manufacturing sector of this industry. This is a portable course that can be held at any location nominated by the member. It covers the main materials, product types and manufacturing operations in a simplified way.

Safety footwear

Covers testing to the various European standards, as well as national test procedures. This course also includes aspects of relevant legislation and new developments in standardisation, together with discussions and practical exercises covering common problems found in safety footwear.

Best use of leather

This is a two-part programme. Part one covers manufacture (including environmental issues and testing). Part two covers quality, grading, economy, and use in manufacturing.

SATRA Accredited Footwear Technologist (SAFT)

This internationally-recognised award can be gained by passing examinations in five key subject areas. This includes a ten-day training programme covering: lasts and fitting, materials and constructions, laboratory test procedures, product design, performance and risk assessment, and quality assurance and supplier auditing.

Fitting courses

SATRA can tailor fitting courses to your specific needs. All staff involved in product development and any aspect of fitting footwear must know what is expected of them. Training ensures that the instruction is effective and staff are provided with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve customer satisfaction. It also ensure everyone works to defined standards.

In support of SATRA systems.

Supervisor training

A tailor-made training activity on specialist subjects to develop existing knowledge.

Quality assurance

Training for the introduction of SATRA's Global Quality System.

CD technical directory
The Footwear Lexicon (a dictionary of 2,000 widely used footwear terms in eight languages, with definitions in English).

Video films - including:

  • Welted Footwear - to assist supervisors in training operatives in five key manufacturing operations, from pull-toe lasting through to sole stitching.
  • Cement Footwear - supports the training of operatives in four key manufacturing operations, from forepart lasting through to heel attaching.
  • Shoemaking Step by Step - an ideal induction tool, aimed at non-shoemaking personnel such as shoe retailers.
  • Shoe Retailing Step by Step - following on from Shoemaking Step by Step, this programme covers: fitting the foot, product care, and customer complaints.

Knowledge CDs
These provide information on a range of production topics, including cutting, stitching and lasting.
