Testing services

State-of-the-art facilities and expertise for testing the physical, chemical, environmental and flammability properties of materials and products. A SATRA test report offers the most accurate interpretation of results and has considerable authority.

Flammability Testing

SATRA can assess the flammability, burning characteristics, resistance to ignition and spread of flame on a range of consumer products. Flammability testing at SATRA ensures your materials and products meet appropriate legislation for ignition and flammability. We provide an outstanding technical service that is fast, reliable and supported with technical expertise for determining product flammability.

Services available

SATRA has one of the most comprehensive facilities in the UK for determining the effects of heat and flame on a wide variety of products, including clothing flammability, furniture flammability, home furnishings flammability and safety products flammability.

We have a range of flammability chambers, the largest measuring 8m x 8m x 3m. This is used to carry out flammability and ignition tests on all types of furniture such as chairs, 3 piece suites, beds and mattresses. For example we can carry out fire safety tests to UK regulations, European standards and to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards specified for upholstery, beds and mattresses in ships.

Use SATRA for the full range of flammability testing including:

  • floorcoverings flammability
  • curtain flammability
  • toy flammability
  • children's nightwear flammability
  • protective glove flammability
  • hospital bedding flammability

SATRA's Instrumented Dummy (SID) - the only one in the UK to be fully accredited by UKAS to ISO DIS 13506 - is used for assessing the heat and flame resistance of firefighters' clothing. Thermal sensors inside the articulated dummy monitor temperatures using a sophisticated logging system.

SATRA also constructed its own test rig to evaluate gloves and clothing likely to come into contact with molten metal or welding sparks.
